"Jen’s Lucky Duckling workshop was superbly organized and so much fun! She confidently and enthusiastically works with participants of varied knitting skill and experience. We all created ducks with their own personality and mine has stolen the heart of everyone who meets her. I can't wait to make another."

--Nicole K (and Quackers the duck)

Join us for a two-part workshop at Purlin' J’s Yarn Emporium where you will make a joyful knitted baby duck! The finished duck stands about 6” tall. A materials kit is included with your class fee. You will use the Lucky Duckling pattern by Claire Garland of Dot Pebbles. This duckling makes a soft, special gift for someone young (or young-at-heart), but would also be a comforting Spring-time decoration at home.

In the class, you will work with quality alpaca, mohair and wool using knit/purl stitches, yarn held double, increases/decreases, pick-up and knit, short row shaping, and mattress stitch. Tips and instruction will be provided to help ensure accuracy and success of your finished, stuffed creature.

Note from the instructor: You will need 2-3 hours of knitting time between the two classes in order to finish knitting the duck body. We will use our second class session to stitch and stuff our ducklings.

The duck is an intermediate-level knit. Years of knitting experience aren’t necessary to make the duckling, but it does require background skills in order to get the most out of the class, and ensure the instructor balances time with each participant.

Prerequisites: Please bring to the first class two knitted swatches in stockinette stitch, each 15 stitches x 30 rows, in medium to bulky yarn, plus a good length of yarn and darning needle for mattress stitch practice.  Participants should be comfortable with knit/purl, cast-on/cast-off, increases/decreases. Some experience with “short-row shaping” and “pick-up and knit” would be helpful but not required. You have a willingness to learn from others and encourage each other!

Materials Needed:

  • A printed copy of the Lucky Duckling Pattern, available on Ravelry: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lucky-duckling
  • Your two knitted swatches for mattress-stitch practice (see Prerequisites above)
  • 3.5mm knitting needles
  • Several locking and several moveable stitch markers
  • yarn/tapestry needle
  • scissors, sticky notes
  • Yarn and other duckling materials are included in the class fee

About the Instructor: Jen Lachance is permanently enthusiastic about fibre and cloth. She is a Mom to humans and furry creatures, as well as a wife. Jen also works with children in schools. She learned to knit when one son decided to join the recess knitting group at his school. Years later, enjoyment from creating with two knitting needles and yarn is still young.

Refund Policy: Please provide 48 hours cancellation notice before the first class in order to be eligible for a refund.
